Kitchen Tile

When updating your kitchen, the tile you select plays an important role in both the overall aesthetic and functionality of the room. To make your culinary space one that you can efficiently cook, enterain and relax in, choose tile for the floor that is durable to support this high-traffic area and wall tile that can serve as a more scrubbable surface for grease and splatters. We like to start the process by first understanding how your kitchen will fit into your lifestyle and how you intend to use it.

Determining which areas of the kitchen will be tiled is the first step. From there, you can decide which materials are most appropriate and begin to select finishes that achieve your desired look. Whether you opt for timeless ceramic tile, durable porcelain, statement glass or natural stone—the type of tile you choose will make a big difference in the heart of your home.

The most common areas in a kitchen to tile include the floor, backsplash and small nook areas that could serve as an accent wall, beverage center or wetbar. Each comes with its own set of considerations and plenty of options to choose from!

Kitchen Floor Tile

In addition to the overall design aesthetic of the space, it is important consider the practicality of the flooring you select for your kitchen. Porcelain tile is a popular choice as it is durable and easy to maintain. When selecting tile for your kitchen floors, opt for something that can withstand heavy foot traffic, water and spills.

Porcelain tile is also most commonly used for kitchen floors as it is impervious to moisture, meaning it is less likely to get damaged and will wear better overtime, whereas ceramic tile fired at a lower temperature and more subject to chipping

Natural stone can refer to many types of materials including marble, granite, travertine, slate and others and can be a beautiful choice for kitchen flooring as it creates a timeless, authentic look. However its durability and resilience depend on the type of stone, with all of it requiring periodic sealing to protect against stains.

Backsplashes

Backsplashes present an area of the kitchen where you can get creative. You have a wide range of material options when it comes to backsplashes, with ceramic, glass and stone being most popular. When selecting tile for your backsplash, consider the durability, maintenance and aesthetic appeal. This can be an area where you can add color and pattern or even incorporate a beautiful mosaic for visual interest. Narrow down your selections by coordinating with the floors, cabinets and countrtops but use this as an opportunity to introduce color and individuality to your space.

Accent Walls

Similar to the backsplash, a kitchen accent wall can be an area to have some fun and take some risk without compromising the overall design or a neutral palette. Since it isn’t an area where there is a lot of splashing or spills. Here you can excercise creative freedom to add color, design elements and texture to one wall or small nook to add layers to your design and give it more visual interest. Common accent walls in a kitchen could be a coffee nook, open shelving, wet bar or additional storage. Many times this overall area is smaller, allowing you to add flair to the space without compromising the budget.
